Winemaker's Notes

The Itata Valley is one of Chile's oldest wine-growing regions and is home to some of the oldest vines in the country. The valley boasts beautiful, gentle rolling hills and is home to one of the oldest coastal ranges in Chile. The region has a cool Mediterranean-type climate influenced by the Pacific Ocean. Due to the cool temperatures, the vines are trained to grow "en cabeza," which resembles a head with little spikes. This type of training keeps the vines closer to the ground and the grapes warm from the cool Pacific breeze.

While Orange Wine may be trending, it's an old method for making white wine. In Itata Valley, "Orange Wine" is considered white wine. This is because pressing grapes is an expensive, relatively new technology. Because of the cost, white wine technology never made it to the Itata Valley, and the region's winemakers relied on more traditional ways of making wine.

What is Orange Wine/Amber Wine/Skin-Contact Wine

Orange wine, also known as amber wine, is a type of wine made from white grapes that are left in contact with their skins for an extended period of time, resulting in a wine that has a deep orange or amber color with a weightier mouthfeel.

Orange wine has been made in various regions throughout the world for centuries, and each region has its own cultural and linguistic traditions. As a result, orange wine has been called different names in different languages, such as "ramato" in Italian, "qvevri" in Georgian, and "maceration" in French or just "vino blanco" in Chile.

The term "orange wine" itself is relatively new and only gained popularity in the 21st century, due to the rise of natural and organic winemaking practices.

Winemaker's Notes

This rosé wine hails from the Bardenas Reales desert in the northernmost region of Spain - the border of Rioja and France. Navarra is best known for having the best rosé wines and gained this reputation during the Middle Ages, as medieval pilgrims going on the Camino de Santiago route began noting the exceptionally high quality of rosé wines encountered while passing through the Kingdom of Navarra.

Our rosé is always made from red grapes and remains in contact with the skins until it has the right color - between 8-12 hours. After the grapes are pressed, and the skins are separated, we ferment the wine in a stainless steel tank for 30 days. We use indigenous yeasts and ferment at a low temperature to preserve the aromas. Once fermentation ends, we rack the wine and quickly blend a combination of red grenache, syrah, tempranillo, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon. Afterward, we stir the lees (dead yeast) in a stainless steel tank to add a creamy flavor and balance the acidity.

Winemaker's Notes

Our Sauvignon Blanc hails from the Curicó Valley, boasting a viticulture tradition dating back to the 1800s. While the Spanish conquistadors brought the vines, the French brought viticultural knowledge to the country during the late 20th century.

The terroir is a combination of sand and the granitic decomposition of the coastal mountain range. This fertile soil is rich in volcanic basalt and limestone. This combination keeps the soil cold and allows the Sauv Blanc to ripen perfectly. These soils are far more fertile than those in other wine-producing regions of Chile and have been a major player in the success of the region's wines.

We hand harvest our Sauvignon Blanc, ferment it in a stainless steel tan, stir on lees, and then blend it with dry Riesling. This beautiful white wine has tropical fruit aromas and acidity typical of a traditional Sauvignon Blanc, but the addition of the Riesling adds beautiful floral notes and minerality.

This Pinot Noir comes from the Curicó Valley appellation in Chile and is located in the central valley between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes. This is a cool climate region, perfect for growing Pinot Noir. This wine is unique because the vines are original European rootstock from Burgundy, France, grown on volcanic basalt and limestone. This terroir keeps the soil cold and allows the Pinot Noir to ripen perfectly.

After hand-harvesting the grape, we cold soak the grapes with stems for five days to extract earthier aromas that balance the varietal's dark berry flavors and minimize harsh tannins. After the soak, we let the fermentation begin and keep the grapes in concrete tanks, which helps to extract the color and primary aromas. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged in neutral french oak for nine months.
